Terms of Service
These terms govern your use of Boba Talk ("the app"), provided by Payments Culture Limited ("we", "us"), a company registered in England and Wales.
By installing or using the app, you agree to these terms. If you don't agree, don't use the app.
1. The service
Boba Talk is a translation app focused on English ↔ Taiwanese Mandarin, with additional languages potentially to be added over time. Basic translations run on your device using Apple's Translation framework. Advanced features — "Teach me", "Show colloquial", regional comparisons, related phrases — use Anthropic's Claude API via our hosted server.
Translation quality depends on the underlying technologies (Apple Translation, Anthropic Claude). We don't guarantee accuracy, and you shouldn't rely on the app for safety-critical translations (medical, legal, regulatory). For those, use a qualified human translator.
2. Subscriptions
Tiers
- Free — your first 20 advanced breakdowns included, then 5 more each month, 20 saved favourites, 4 free phrasebooks. Apple Translate basic translations remain unlimited.
- Pro — Effectively unlimited advanced breakdowns (capped at 1,000/month server-side to prevent abuse), unlimited saved favourites, all phrasebooks. Sold monthly or annually with a 7-day free trial.
Prices
- Pro Monthly — £3.99 / month
- Pro Annual — £29.99 / year (about 37% cheaper per month than the monthly plan)
Both Pro plans include a 7-day free trial. After the trial ends, the plan auto-renews at the price above unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the trial ends.
Billing
Subscriptions are processed by Apple via your Apple ID. Payment is charged to your Apple ID at confirmation of purchase (or at the end of any free trial). Subscriptions auto-renew unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. You can manage and cancel subscriptions in your iOS / macOS Settings → [your name] → Subscriptions.
Annual prices renew at the same price stated at the time of purchase, subject to currency adjustment by Apple. Apple may change its currency conversion or display prices according to its App Store policies.
No refunds from us
Refunds are handled by Apple under their App Store refund policy. We have no ability to issue or deny refunds directly.
Price changes
If we change the price of a subscription tier, the change will affect new subscribers immediately. Existing subscribers will be notified by Apple before any price change applies to them.
Quota enforcement
Monthly limits are enforced server-side and reset on the 1st of each calendar month (UTC). Unused quota does not roll over. The Pro tier's 1,000-request hard cap exists to prevent automated abuse — if you hit it, contact us.
3. Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- Use the app to generate, request, or process content that violates Anthropic's usage policies, including content that is illegal, abusive, defamatory, hateful, or designed to harm.
- Reverse-engineer the app's API protocol to bypass quotas or impersonate other users.
- Resell or redistribute the app or its translations as a paid service.
- Submit content you don't have the right to translate (e.g. confidential third-party documents under NDA).
We may suspend access to the advanced features for accounts (anonymous client IDs or subscription receipts) showing patterns of abuse.
4. Privacy
Use of the app is also governed by our Privacy Policy, which forms part of these terms.
5. Intellectual property
The app, its design, code, and brand ("Boba Talk", the boba cup logo, the terracotta-on-cream visual identity) are owned by Payments Culture Ltd. The app is licensed to you, not sold — you may use it on Apple devices linked to your Apple ID under Apple's standard EULA.
Translations produced by the app are not subject to our copyright. You may use them freely for any lawful purpose.
6. Third-party services
Boba Talk uses:
- Apple Translation framework (governed by Apple's terms)
- Apple StoreKit for purchases (governed by Apple's terms)
- Anthropic Claude API for advanced features (Anthropic's terms apply to your use of those features)
- Cloudflare Workers for our hosted server (Cloudflare's terms apply)
Our use of these services does not create a contractual relationship between you and them on our behalf, but their terms still apply where their service is involved.
7. Disclaimers
THE APP IS PROVIDED "AS IS". WE DO NOT WARRANT THAT TRANSLATIONS ARE ACCURATE, COMPLETE, OR FIT FOR ANY PARTICULAR PURPOSE.
WE ARE NOT LIABLE FOR ANY LOSS ARISING FROM RELIANCE ON A TRANSLATION, OR FROM TEMPORARY UNAVAILABILITY OF THE ADVANCED FEATURES, EXCEPT WHERE LIMITATION OF LIABILITY IS PROHIBITED BY LAW.
WE LIMIT OUR LIABILITY TO YOU IN ANY 12-MONTH PERIOD TO THE GREATER OF £100 OR THE AMOUNT YOU PAID US FOR SUBSCRIPTIONS IN THAT PERIOD.
NOTHING IN THESE TERMS LIMITS LIABILITY FOR DEATH, PERSONAL INJURY, FRAUD, OR ANYTHING ELSE THAT CANNOT BE LIMITED UNDER ENGLISH LAW.
8. Termination
You can stop using the app at any time. Cancel your subscription via Apple to end recurring charges.
We may suspend or terminate access to the advanced features (and refund the unused portion of your subscription via Apple where required) if you breach these terms or use the app abusively.
9. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales. Disputes will be heard in the courts of England and Wales.
10. Changes
We may update these terms from time to time. Material changes will be flagged in-app before they take effect, and you'll have the chance to cancel your subscription if you don't agree.
